BEACH INFORMATION

General Inforation

A quick overview

The physical layout and structure of the shoreline is constantly changing. The beach is continually battered by wind and crashing water. As wind and water move sand the configuration of the beach itself changes which in turn impacts things such as currents and dunes. This phenomenon is more visible after a beach experiences server weather such as hurricanes or typhoons. A beach is truly a product of its environment.

What is sand made of ?

Sand is actually naturally grinded tiny bits and pieces of rock. The most common type of rock found in sand is Quartz, however the composition of any particular body of sand depends on it’s surrounding terrain. A more in-depth discussion about the composition of sand can be found here.

what kind of animals live at the beach ?

Costal wildlife is not limited to seagulls and crabs. The shore plays host many other types of animals including bacteria , algae, shrimp, and turtles to name a few.

why does sand stick to everything ?

The reason sand sticks to everything can most likely be traced to it’s physical structure. Although a grain a sand may appear to small to be nothing more than a spec it is actually very contoured or "jagged". This gives sand the opportunity to stay in contact with skin or any other material for that matter because it can “grab”. I also believe that kinetic energy plays a role.

what is an estuary

an estuary is a place where the mouth of a river meets the ocean and the resulting mixture of fresh and saltwater. Estuaries play and essential role in the environment and overall cycle of costal life.
